What Is FAFSA?
This stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is the method of determining the grant, loan or scholarship amount the student will be able to get from the government by deciding how much of the education the household should be responsible for paying.
All students should be sure to file a FAFSA when they apply for college, even if they expect to be able to pay for college without assistance.
What kind of Federal Aid is available?
There are four different sources of financial aid a student can apply for:
Scholarships
An amount of money awarded either from the government or a private source to a certain amount of students every year. Most are given based on contest programs as well as merit.
Grants
Both state and federal grants are available for application. They, like scholarships, do not have to be repaid, and a certain amount is awarded to either lessen or completely cover the cost. Usually money for books is given, as well as housing benefits.
Fellowships
A gift aid that is used for a specific academic purpose, such as a research project. It does not have to be repaid, but the money is only to be used that particular goal.
Student Loans
A loan that must be paid back to the government with interest. Most will have payment plans that cover the cost of their schooling for most of their lives on a higher degree level.
